It’s been a fairly slow week over here, but I promised an update about the job and where I’m at in the Web 101 course on The Odin Project website. So, I’ll start with the new gig. I was fortunate to land an IT Project Manager consulting position at Amy’s Kitchen (Amy’s burritos, frozen foods, etc.). It’ll mostly be dealing with the infrastructure side of things, tightening up response times, and ensuring their Smartsheet and Freshservice dashboards are up to date. Truly my role will be working with the devs / analysts to ensure the IT team is hitting their targets and that the business has more transparency as to when updates should be expected. It’s a much different role compared to my first two jobs (product management background), but my skills will definitely be applicable and I’ll learn a ton. It’s only going to help me as I pursue a job as a web developer. And while the work isn’t glorious by any means, this type of work is at the heart of every company and known by essentially every full time developer. So, I’m stoked to learn a ton, apply some critical thinking, and hopefully make an impact during the 2017 year for Amy’s. Can’t wait to start this upcoming Monday!
As for the coding, it was a relatively slow week as I prioritized spending some time with my friends (one of which is heading off to Europe for a few months). But, with the time I did have, I moved through testing basics and started a Ruby project. It’s actually really cool to finally be using rspec and Ruby to write tests / real code. I’m sure it’s a long ways from true development code, but I’m getting a real taste using the terminal, sublime, and pushing to github. I’m part way through the Ruby project, and you can check out the forked repo here if you want to see my progress.
This week is going to definitely start testing my time management and drive to continue learning the necessities to become a web developer. I’m actually really stoked to be on a set schedule and get in the full swing of things. I’ll have another update sometime during the week.
